The collection, 1903-1981, documents Native American issues, legislation and governmental organizations concerned about those issues in Mich., other states, and the U.S. in general. Most of the collection documents the Mich. Commission on Indians Affairs, 1969-1972, undated, in reports, bylaws, correspondence, memos, project files, meeting minutes and agendas, proposals, surveys, etc. Other Mich. organizations in the collection include the Mich. Governor's Special Task Force on Indian Fishing Rights, Mich. Interim Action Committee on Indian Problems, and the Inter-Tribal Councils of Mich. Some of the topics documented in the collection include treaties, health issues, education, the Chippewa Gild Craft, fishing rights, and legislation, and the history of Native Americans as shown in photographs, newspaper clippings and scrapbooks. A small amount of miscellaneous material of the Butt family is also included.

Dr. Butt was the Academic Dean at Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba (Mich.). He was also a Commissioner on the Mich. Commission on Indian Affairs, 1969-1972. His father, Rev. F.
